Minister for Disability Services John Ajaka today launched the 2015 Don't DIS my ABILITY campaign, which celebrates the diversity and ability of people with disability.
This year’s theme, ‘Inclusion is about U and I’ aims to provide all Australians with the tools to help them interact with, and be more inclusive of people with disability. The campaign runs from 30 November to 13 December.
Now in its 12th year, Don’t DIS my ABILITY helps all Australians overcome the fear they may have of offending people with disability when interacting with them and focuses on breaking down barriers and encourages positive interactions.
The campaign’s flagship comedy cabaret “No Offence, But!” will be held on 30 November at the Lend Lease Darling Quarter Theatre in Darling Harbour and will challenge some of the fears and misperceptions the community has about people with disability.
This year’s cabaret includes Todd McKenney and Tommy Dean who will shake-up people’s perceptions and challenge some of the uncertainty people have about people with disability.
Mr Ajaka said that the Don’t DIS my ABILITY campaign draws attention to what everyone can do to make NSW a better place for people with disability.
“Comedy is a great way to have a frank dialogue to allow people to face some of their fears about how to approach people with disability through humour, song and theatre,” Mr Ajaka said.
This year, nine ambassadors have been selected as the Don’t DIS my ABILITY campaign’s voice, and have been invited to use the campaign as a platform to share their unique life experiences and generate discussion on everyday interactions.
